Can You Take Your Vape Pen On A Plane?

Despite all their dissimilarities, it seems that smoking and vaping may have more in common than one may have thought. Once upon a time, you could smoke literally anywhere – banks, restaurants, airplanes – nothing was off-limits. Then came all of the restrictions and the worry over secondhand smoke. Vaping has experienced somewhat the same progression. When vaping first came into view, vapers had unlimited freedom. They vaped anywhere and everywhere they chose – airplanes, buses, trains, restaurants, inside of buildings – the list went on and on. They even had others commenting on the “deliciousness” of the vapor being exhaled. (You never heard that with a smoker!)

Can I Carry My Vape Pen on a Plane?

You are allowed to carry nicotine e-liquid vape pens on a plane, with you in your carry-on luggage. Check your individual airline policy on max liquid size, and the max battery size.

You are not allowed to check-in vape pens into your hold luggage. Most vape pens use lithium-ion batteries. In checked baggage, the airlines are afraid that the lithium batteries may get damage, will overheat and run the risk of combusting. It is not an unsubstantiated worry, in fact.

In addition to not being able to carry a lithium battery operated devices in your checked baggage, neither can you charge a lithium battery within the plane. Some frequent travelers have taken to storing their tablets, mobile phones, and electronic cigarette devices in something called a “charging bag”. It’s a sensible way to travel with lithium-ion batteries, and relatively inexpensive. The material that these bags are made from has been designed with one specific purpose in mind: prevent batteries that combust, melt, or otherwise overheat from affecting anything around them.

Can I Carry My Wax Pen on a Plane?

We advise extra caution if you wish to fly with a wax pen, on internal USA flights. State Laws vary in the USA, as to what is legal to be carried in a vape pen. Depending on what material is in your wax pen (CBD, THC, Delta-8, etc), you may be breaking the law by flying with a dab pen to/from a state that does not allow it. Check the relevant state laws!

DO NOT fly with a wax pen on international flights! WNBA star Brittney Griner was detained in Russia for 9 months, when she was caught with cannabis-derived oil cartridges in her bag. Despite oil cartridges being legal in the States, Brittney was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison. Brittney was only released after the US Government agreed a prisoner swap with a notorious weapons dealer. That shows how serious some countries view wax pens!

Vaping is Illegal Whilst on a Plane

DO NOT vape whilst on a plane, or in most areas in the airport. Currently, it is illegal to vape on an airplane and is, in fact, punishable with a $3,000 fine. You might get away with it in the bathroom (we didn’t say that) because the vapor dissipates so quickly; but it certainly isn’t worth the risk. Not only that, smoke detectors these days can now alert airline officials to secret vapers because the new, state-of-the-art smoke detectors are able to sense the vapor. Will Vapes Always be Allowed on Planes?

What is the future for electronic cigarettes and other vaping devices? We can only imagine how restrictive the powers that be will eventually become. For the time being, don’t plan on vaping on that plane. When you transport your gear, do so with your carry-on baggage. And once again, the smart traveler may choose to invest in a charging bag, just to be on the safe side.
