Dab Pen vs Wax Pen: Is There Actually a Difference?

Dab Pen vs Wax Pen: Is There Actually a Difference?

Dab Pen vs Wax Pen: They’re the Same Thing

There is no difference between a dab pen and a wax pen. Both terms describe the exact same type of device — a portable, battery-powered vaporizer designed to heat cannabis wax concentrates and turn them into vapor. You load concentrate into a heating chamber, press a button, and inhale.

The terms are used interchangeably by every manufacturer, retailer, and user in the concentrate space. A device marketed as a “wax pen” by one brand is functionally identical to what another brand calls a “dab pen.” If you’ve been trying to figure out whether you need a dab pen or a wax pen, you’re looking for the same product.

Why Do Both Terms Exist?

The terminology drifted from two different directions.

“Dab pen” comes from the dabbing community. A “dab” is a small amount of cannabis concentrate consumed in a single hit — the term predates portable devices and originally referred to the practice of dropping a small piece of concentrate onto a hot nail. When portable devices emerged that replicated the dabbing experience without a torch and rig, they inherited the name: dab pen.

“Wax pen” comes from the concentrate itself. Wax is both a specific concentrate type (opaque, soft, similar to candle wax) and a catch-all term for cannabis concentrates generally. Devices designed for use with wax concentrates naturally became wax pens, particularly as the category expanded beyond just shatter and wax into rosin, budder, live resin, and other forms.

Both names stuck because both describe the same thing from a different angle. Neither is more correct. The industry just never standardized on one.

What About “Concentrate Pen”?

A third term — concentrate pen — is also used to describe the same device. This is the most technically accurate description since modern dab pens work with a broad range of concentrate types beyond just wax. But it’s the least commonly searched term and the least used in retail contexts.

For practical purposes: dab pen = wax pen = concentrate pen. All the same device.

Are All Wax/Dab Pens the Same?

The terminology is interchangeable. The devices themselves are not. Within the “dab pen” / “wax pen” category there’s a significant range of quality, heating technology, battery life, and price.

The key differences that actually matter when choosing one:

Heating element. The most important variable. Wire-rod coil designs (quartz dual coil, quartz tri coil) heat faster but create hot spots. Quartz bucket designs — where a transparent quartz cup sits over the coil so your concentrate never directly touches metal — distribute heat more evenly. Ceramic bucket chambers heat evenly and retain heat well. Premium devices like the Yocan Black Pocket use 360° all-side ceramic heating that eliminates hot spots entirely.

Temperature range. Most devices offer 3–5 preset voltage settings. The best devices let you dial down to 2.5V or lower for terpene-sensitive concentrates like live rosin. Devices that only reach 3.4V as their lowest setting are too hot for premium low-temp concentrate work.

Battery capacity. Entry-level devices run 500–700mAh. Decent devices run 900–1700mAh. Anything under 700mAh requires daily charging for regular users. The Yocan Orbit at $32.99 has 1700mAh — exceptional for the price tier.

Vapor path. Glass and ceramic mouthpieces add nothing to the flavor of your vapor. Silicone and plastic mouthpieces can add a subtle off-taste, particularly when new.

What IS Different: Dab Pen vs Electric Nectar Collector vs E-Rig

While dab pen and wax pen mean the same thing, there are related devices that are genuinely different and worth understanding:

Dab pen / wax pen: You load concentrate into a chamber before you vape. Self-contained. The concentrate is sealed inside the device. Best for portability and discreet daily use.

Electric nectar collector (dab straw): You heat the tip and dip it directly into your concentrate container. No loading step. Faster for high-frequency sessions. Concentrate stays in its original jar. Better for runny concentrates like sauce or live resin that are hard to scoop cleanly.

E-rig (electric dab rig): Larger device with a water chamber for filtration. Water-cooled hits. Better vapor smoothness than a pen. Better suited for home use than pocket carry. Starts around $60 and up.

The decision between these three is more meaningful than the dab pen vs wax pen terminology question — because these actually do different things. See our complete wax pen guide for a full breakdown of how they compare.

So Which One Should You Buy?

Since dab pen and wax pen are the same thing, the real question is which device to buy — not which term to use. The answer depends on your budget and what you value.

Best overall under $35: Yocan Orbit ($32.99) — quartz bucket over coil, terp pearls, 1700mAh, glass mouthpiece. Our #1 seller, consistently.

Best precision under $30: Yocan Iris ($25.99) — OLED, 2.5–4.2V precision, 900mAh. Best for terpene-forward concentrates at low temps.

Best under $100: Yocan Black Pocket ($69.99) — 1°F precision, 360° ceramic heating, spiral airflow, terp pearls. Competes with devices at $120+.
