How Do I Change My Wick in a Clearomizer?

Wick In A Clearomizer

Nothing lasts forever, and that includes the wicks and coils in your clearomizer. And while coils should be cleaned on a regular basis and changed as needed, the wick will need to be replaced as well. How often it needs to be replaced is determined by any number of factors. The kind of material you use for your wicks is a matter of personal preference but changing them will improve your vaping experience in most cases.

No one wants nasty residue gunking up their vape. The cleaning and changing of coils and wick replacement lessens the chance of a burnt taste and thin clouds.

How To Change the Wick or Cotton

Here is a brief explanation as to how to change the wick or cotton in your vaping device:

  • Cut two pieces of cotton
  • Roll the piece and start pulling the cotton through the coil
  • Cut the ends off the cotton with a scissors
  • Tuck the cotton ends under the coil (tweezers or small screwdriver works for this)
  • With an eyedropper, prime the wicks
  • Enjoy your vape

The organic cotton that you will be using here is readily available in rope or ball form and the least expensive of all materials used for wicking. This is a matter of preference, but some individuals choose to before they change out their cotton wicks, boil the replacement cotton for approximately 15 minutes. (This helps get rid of any chemical treatment or bleaching that may have been done to the cotton.) Of course, this is going to add to your time because, in order for it to sufficiently dry, it has to lay out for a while. And it must be dry!

How Often Should I Change My Wick?

Are there clear signs that your wick needs changing? If you notice a lack of vapor production, then it likely means that your wick should be changed. If you’re getting thinner vapor from your device and/or you just aren’t enjoying the flavor that you used to enjoy, the coil and wick are likely not doing their job properly. What will happen next is that your vapor will decrease even more, and you will start noticing a burnt flavor that is extremely unpleasant. Try to stop it before it gets to that point by changing your wick (and possibly your coil).

I Changed Flavors – Do I Need to Change My Wick?

There is no clear-cut answer to this question. It’s a topic that is debated by many. With some individuals, every time they change their e-juice, they change their coils and wick. It makes sense because the coils and wick take on or absorb the flavor. It could significantly prolong the lifespan of your wick, however, if you enjoy one flavor longer or change to a similar flavor.

Wick Materials

Cotton wicks are the most popular option among beginners and seasoned vaping veterans. They are readily available and very inexpensive. The rayon wick, however, is currently becoming more and more popular. It is man-made, and considered semi synthetic, being made with organic materials. Compared to cotton wicks, it doesn’t collect as much residue; therefore, doesn’t need to be changed as often. Rayon wicks are also less prone to dry hits.

Additional materials for wicks can include Japanese cotton pads called Koh Gen Do, tightly braided rope called ekowool, and silica wicks (which are also growing in popularity).
