Refillable Pod System Kits and Rechargeable Vape Pods
A pod system kit is a compact, rechargeable vape that uses removable pod cartridges instead of a tank. Fill the pod with e-liquid, click it into the device, and vape. When the coil wears out or you want to switch flavors, swap the pod. Refillable, reusable, and a lot cheaper to run than disposables over time. Although they are often also called pod vapes, pod kits, pod mods, or refillable vape devices, they are all the same category.
If you're switching from disposables and want the simplest possible reusable vape, this is where to start.

How Much Does a Pod System Cost?
| Type |
Device price |
Replacement pods |
E-liquid |
| Basic pod AIO |
$15–$25 |
$3–$6 per pod |
$10–$20 per 30ml |
| Mid-range pod kit |
$25–$50 |
$4–$8 per pod |
$10–$20 per 30ml |
| Pod mod (high-powered) |
$40–$80 |
$5–$10 per pod |
$10–$20 per 30ml |
The device is a one-time cost and after that it's replacement pods and e-liquid, which is where refillable pod vapes significantly undercut disposables. A 30ml bottle of nic salt at $15 fills multiple pods and typically equates to well over 3,000 puffs. A disposable giving the same puff count costs $15–$20 and can't be refilled.
Open vs Closed Pod Systems
| Type |
How it works |
Best for |
| Open (refillable) |
You fill the pod with your own e-liquid |
Flexibility, lower running cost, any brand of juice |
| Closed (pre-filled) |
Pods come pre-filled, snap in and vape |
Maximum simplicity, no filling needed |
Most of this collection is open pod systems. You buy the device once, then fill reusable pods with whatever e-liquid you choose: any nicotine strength, any flavor, any brand. Closed systems lock you into the manufacturer's pod range, which tends to be more expensive per ml and more limiting on flavor choice. The most common closed system you'll come across is Vuse.
Pod Mod vs Pod AIO
- Pod Mod: Adjustable wattage, airflow control, usually a display screen. More power and customisation. Best for vapers who want to dial in their experience.
- Pod AIO (All-In-One): Compact single-piece device, usually draw-activated or single-button. Minimal settings, maximum portability. The best small vape option for beginners or anyone who just wants to vape without adjusting anything.
MTL, RDL, and DTL Draw Styles
Your draw style determines which pod kit and coils to buy.
| Draw style |
What it feels like |
Nicotine strength |
Best coil resistance |
| MTL (mouth-to-lung) |
Like drawing on a cigarette, tight and smooth |
Nic salts 20–50mg |
0.8Ω–1.4Ω |
| RDL (restricted direct lung) |
Slightly airier, small clouds |
Nic salts or freebase 6–12mg |
0.4Ω–0.8Ω |
| DTL (direct lung) |
Open, airy draw, bigger clouds |
Freebase 3–6mg |
Under 0.4Ω |
Most pod kits in this collection are designed for MTL or RDL. If you're coming from cigarettes or a disposable, MTL is the closest match to what you're used to.
Nic Salts vs Freebase: Which E-Liquid to Use
Pod systems are particularly well suited to nicotine salt e-liquids, and this is worth understanding before you buy.
Salt nic vapes use a nicotine salt formulation that delivers nicotine more efficiently at lower temperatures. You get a strong nicotine hit at higher strengths (20–50mg) without harsh throat burn. Nic salts are the standard for MTL pod kits and the go-to choice if you're switching from cigarettes.
Freebase nicotine is what traditional e-liquids use. Lower strengths (3–12mg) suit higher-powered pod mods at RDL and DTL settings. If you've been vaping for a while and are used to freebase, it works well in the right device.
If you're using a compact MTL pod kit, go with nic salts. If you're using a higher-powered pod mod at RDL or DTL settings, freebase at a lower strength gives you more vapor and flavor.
Pod Systems vs Disposables Cost
Heavy daily vapers typically break even on a pod kit within the first month of switching from disposables. After that, every fill instead of a new disposable is pure saving. A refillable pod system also cuts down significantly on plastic waste. One device replaces one disposable per few days.
If you're spending $60+ a month on disposables, a mid-range refillable vape kit pays for itself fast.
Small Vapes and Mini Pod Kits
If portability is your priority, pod systems are the right category. Most are genuinely pocket-sized, smaller and lighter than a pack of cigarettes. Mini pod kits and ultra-compact AIO devices are among the smallest vapes on the market without sacrificing battery life or flavor.
If you want the smallest possible pod kit that still delivers all-day battery and real flavor, look for devices with 800mAh+ batteries in a slim form factor. The brands in this collection (Vaporesso, Uwell, GeekVape, SMOK) all produce compact options at different price points.
What to Look For
- Battery Capacity: Most pod kits run 600mAh to 2000mAh. A 1000mAh+ battery gets most users through a full day. Smaller devices trade battery life for portability.
- Pod Capacity: Pods hold 1ml to 6ml of e-liquid. Larger pods mean fewer refills; smaller pods mean a slimmer device.
- Coil Type: Some pods have built-in coils, so you replace the whole pod when the coil wears out. Others have replaceable coils inside a reusable pod shell, which is cheaper long-term. Check this before buying.
- Airflow Control: Higher-end pod mods let you adjust airflow to tighten or loosen the draw. Basic kits have fixed airflow. For MTL, look for a tighter airflow setting.
- USB-C Charging: Standard on most current devices. Some older models still use micro-USB, so it's worth checking.
FAQs
What is a vape pod?
A vape pod is the removable cartridge in a pod system. It contains the coil and holds the e-liquid. You fill it (in an open system) or buy it pre-filled (in a closed system), click it into the device body, and vape. When the coil wears out or the flavor fades, you swap or refill the pod.
What is the best refillable vape for beginners?
A compact pod AIO from Vaporesso, Uwell, or SMOK is the standard recommendation. They're draw-activated (no buttons to learn), use nic salt e-liquid, and have enough battery to last a full day. The Vaporesso XROS series and Uwell Caliburn range consistently come up as the best refillable pod vapes for new vapers.
Are pod systems better than disposables?
For regular vapers, yes on cost and waste. The running cost per puff is significantly lower once you've paid for the device. Disposables are more convenient for occasional use or travel, but a refillable nicotine vape is cheaper per puff for anyone vaping daily.
What e-liquid should I use in a pod system?
Nicotine salt e-liquid for MTL pod kits. Freebase e-liquid for higher-powered pod mods at RDL or DTL settings. As a starting point: if your device has coils above 0.8Ω, use nic salts. Below 0.8Ω, freebase at 3–12mg works well.
