What are the Pros and Cons of Sub-Ohm Vaping?
If you are new to the vaping world, you may not be familiar with all of the terms involved. In fact, when speaking to more experienced vapers, you may feel like you need an English to Vape-ese dictionary. (No, I don’t think they really exist. But they should.)
One term that you may have heard of, but not fully understood, is sub ohm vaping. What is it? What’s involved? And what are the pros and cons?
What Is Sub Ohm Vaping?
Sub Ohm vapes are devices that have less than 1Ω ohm of resistance. Ohms are defined as the resistance of a coil – the coil that your atomizer uses (an atomizer is a device that is used for successful sub ohm vaping). The amount of current that passes through your coil is referred to in ohms.
The Pros of Sub Ohm Vaping
- You can produce big, thick, luscious clouds – producing bigger clouds isn’t everyone’s idea of fun, but it is pretty cool. If cloud production is important to you, you simply must try sub ohm vaping.
- Most people experience a more intense, flavorful vape – weirdly, the jury is still out on this one. Most people agree with the statement, but there are naysayers (who would likely also argue just about anything).
- You get to use fancy coils – Juggernauts, Aliens, and Claptons were fancy coils that experienced the pleasure of being all the rage about a year ago. But they weren’t made for mouth-to-lung setups with low wattage. You’ll need a sub ohm atomizer if you want to give them a try.
- You can enjoy a smoother vape – particularly if you enjoy nicotine, you’ll want to lessen that objectionably strong throat hit. A smoother vapor can be produced by sub ohm vaping.
- There is so much wonderful hardware to choose from – the sub ohm vaping market has increased and enhanced the marketing concepts of many manufacturers. Along with the clouds it produces, it is getting bigger and better; so more drippers, RDTAs, RTAs, sub ohm tanks, and mods are being produced.
The Cons of Sub Ohm Vaping
- Battery life is lessened – what is the recipe for low battery life? High wattage and low resistance coils. It’s a choice you’ll have to make.
- A lesser throat hit – you don’t necessarily want a harsh throat hit, but some people actually enjoy a stronger throat hit. Those people should not use sub ohm devices.
- There are some safety concerns – whether you are vaping at 100 watts or 7 watts, safety is always a concern. Know what your batteries are capable of and have an understanding of Ohm’s law for the safest results.
- Lots of e-liquid – you will likely find yourself going through far more e-liquid than you did when you vaped at higher ohms.
- Takes time – sub ohm vaping will take up a lot of your time as you tweak and tinker with your device, like a classic car connoisseur. If you want convenience, a disposable vape pen will allow you to simply inhale and vape!
- And then there is the flavor dilemma – as suggested earlier, this is up for grabs. Try it yourself and determine whether you think the flavor is better or not so much.
