Can I Use an Expired E-Liquid?
For the most part, expiration dates (particularly on something like e-liquid) is a suggestion. It’s an estimation. It is not an exact science. Some e-juices will expire sooner depending on the flavorings that are used in them. Some of those flavors can taste kind of nasty if they expire. So, you’ll definitely want to take that into consideration. Who wants to inhale rancid cherries?
What Does Vape Juice Contain?
Before we examine the technical expiration date of an e-liquid, take into consideration that VG and PG, if stored correctly, have a normal shelf life of approximately two years. Since these ingredients are found in e-juices, they have a distinct effect on the shelf life of the e-fluids in which they are contained.
That said, expiration dates for most e-fluids usually range between one and two years. Aside from the VG and PG contained within e-liquids, nicotine comes into play as well when discussing shelf life. Consider, also, that your e-fluid will break down sooner (the components contained within) if you expose it to extreme heat or direct sunlight.
E-Liquids Sometimes Change Color
Some people may notice their e-juice changing color or turning brown. What’s going on there? If your e-juice has been exposed to oxygen or light, it could turn brown. It has to do with its constituents and the fact that they’re breaking down. The specifically experienced level of oxidation is a chemical reaction that results in some e-juices changing color – some more readily than others. Exposure to heat can also be a factor in determining whether or not your e-liquid will change color.
Chances are, if you really love your e-liquid, it’s not going to have the chance to go bad. If you don’t like it, consider trading with someone else so that it doesn’t go to waste. For more information on this, read our guide on e-liquid changing color.
