How to Turn On a 510 Battery: Complete Guide (2026)
Five Clicks Turns On Almost Every 510 Battery
The vast majority of 510-thread cart batteries turn on the same way: press the button five times fast. The LED flashes a few times to confirm, and the battery is ready to fire. Five more clicks turns it off.
The exceptions are auto-draw batteries (no button — you just inhale) and a few brand-specific variants that use different click counts. This guide covers all of them, plus what to do when 5 clicks doesn’t seem to work.
🛒 THE ANSWER IN 10 SECONDS:
→ Button-activated battery: Press the button 5 times fast. LED flashes 3 times to confirm power on. Press 5 times again to turn off.
→ Auto-draw / buttonless battery: No power button — just inhale through the mouthpiece. LED lights up while you draw.
→ Nothing happens after 5 clicks? Battery may be dead, locked, or have debris on the button. Skip to troubleshooting.
How to Turn On a Button-Activated 510 Battery
Button-activated batteries are the most common type — Yocan Kodo Pro, Cartisan Pro Pen, Pulsar DL series, and most variable-voltage pens use this style. Here’s the exact sequence.
Step 1: Locate the power button. It’s usually on the side or front of the device, often with an LED ring around it or under it.
Step 2: Press the button 5 times rapidly. Five continuous clicks in a row — click-click-click-click-click. Don’t pause between clicks. Most batteries only register the sequence if all five clicks happen within about 2 seconds.
Step 3: Watch for the confirmation flash. The button or LED ring will flash 3 times (sometimes called a “wake” pattern). Batteries with display screens light up the screen. This confirms the battery is now powered on and ready to fire.
Step 4: Fire the coil by pressing and holding the button. Take your hit while holding the button. The LED stays lit while the coil is heating. Release to stop. Most batteries have a 10-second safety cutoff that ends the hit automatically if you hold too long.
Step 5: Turn off by pressing 5 times again. The same 5-click sequence powers the battery down. To confirm it’s off, press and hold the button — if nothing lights up, the battery is locked.
How to Turn On an Auto-Draw (Buttonless) Battery
Auto-draw batteries have no power button at all. The CCELL Palm, M3 Plus, Ooze Slim, and most disposable-style cart batteries fall in this category. You don’t turn them on — you just use them.
Step 1: Attach your cartridge. Screw the 510 cart onto the battery, finger-tight only.
Step 2: Inhale through the mouthpiece. The pressure sensor inside the battery detects the air movement and activates the coil. Most auto-draw batteries fire within a fraction of a second of starting your pull.
Step 3: Stop inhaling to stop the coil. The coil cuts off the moment you stop drawing air. No off-switch needed.
Auto-draw batteries effectively can’t be “turned off” in the traditional sense — they’re in a kind of standby state whenever the cart is connected. To prevent accidental firing during travel or storage, the safest move is to unscrew the cart from the battery when you’re not using it.
How to Lock and Unlock a 510 Battery
The same 5-click sequence that turns the battery on also locks it when it’s powered off. A locked battery refuses to fire even if you press the button. This is the default safety state for most batteries when they ship from the factory — and it’s the reason most “my new battery isn’t working” complaints exist.
To unlock: 5 clicks rapidly. The LED flashes to confirm. Battery is now on and ready.
To lock again: 5 more clicks. The LED gives the same confirmation flash. Battery is now off and won’t respond to single button presses.
If you press and hold the button on a locked battery and nothing happens — that’s the lock working correctly. It’s not broken. For a full walkthrough including alternate lock sequences, see our How to Unlock a Vape Pen guide.
Brand-Specific Variations
The 5-click rule is the standard. A few brands break it for specific features.
| Brand / Model | Power On/Off | Voltage Change | Preheat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yocan (Kodo, Kodo Pro, DUBB) | 5 clicks | 3 clicks | 2 clicks |
| CCELL (Palm Pro, Kap) | Auto-draw (no button) | 3 clicks (Kap only) | 2 clicks (Kap only) |
| Cartisan (Pro Pen, Veil Bar) | 5 clicks | 3 clicks | 2 clicks |
| Ooze (Slim Twist, Duplex, Bot) | 5 clicks | 3 clicks (or twist dial) | 2 clicks |
| Pulsar (DL series) | 5 clicks | 3 clicks | 2 clicks |
| Airis (Cube 900, slim VV) | 5 clicks | 3 clicks | 2 clicks |
| eGo-T / eGo-C Twist | 5 clicks | Twist dial at bottom | N/A |
| Disposable cart vapes | Auto-draw (no button) | N/A | N/A |
The pattern across the cluster: 5 clicks for on/off, 3 clicks for voltage change, 2 clicks for preheat. Once you learn the rhythm on one battery, almost every other 510 in your collection will work the same way.
When 5 Clicks Doesn’t Work
If you’ve clicked 5 times and the battery shows no sign of life, one of these is the cause.
The clicks aren’t fast enough. Five clicks needs to happen in under 2 seconds. If you’re clicking slowly, the battery resets between clicks and never registers the sequence. Try again faster.
The battery is dead. A battery at 0% won’t respond to any button input. Plug it in for 15 minutes, then try the 5-click sequence again. For a complete charging walkthrough, see our Battery Won’t Charge troubleshooting guide.
The button is dirty or stuck. Oil residue or lint in the button seam can prevent the button from registering clicks. Wipe the seam with a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol, then press the button 10–15 times rapidly to free the mechanism. Try the 5-click sequence again.
The cart is loose. Some batteries won’t fire if the cart isn’t fully seated. Unscrew it and re-attach finger-tight. If the cart sits at an angle or wobbles, the connection isn’t complete.
It’s a brand-new battery in shipping mode. Most batteries ship with a small plastic tab inserted under the button or at the bottom of the device to prevent accidental activation during shipping. Pull this tab out before your first use.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many clicks turn on a vape pen?
Five clicks for nearly all 510-thread cart batteries with a power button. The clicks need to be rapid — within about 2 seconds total. Auto-draw batteries have no button and turn on automatically when you inhale.
Why won’t my brand-new battery turn on?
Three most common reasons: (1) the shipping tab is still inserted under the button — pull it out; (2) the battery isn’t charged — plug it in for 15 minutes; (3) you’re clicking too slowly — the 5 clicks need to happen in under 2 seconds.
How do I know if my battery is on or off?
Press and hold the button. If the LED lights up, the battery is on. If nothing happens, the battery is locked off. A locked battery will not fire even if you press the button — this is the default safe state.
Do I need to turn off my battery between hits?
No. Once unlocked, the battery stays on and ready to fire until you lock it again with 5 clicks. Turning it off matters mainly between sessions or before putting it in a pocket or bag.
What’s the difference between locking and turning off?
For most cart batteries, they’re the same thing. “Locked” and “off” both mean the battery won’t fire when the button is pressed. Five clicks toggles between locked/off and unlocked/on.

Why do vape batteries use 5 clicks instead of a power switch? Five clicks is the industry-standard child-safety lockout. A physical power switch can be turned on accidentally — in a pocket, in a bag, by a curious child. Five rapid clicks is a deliberate sequence that almost can’t happen by accident. The standard was adopted across the entire vaping industry around 2014–2015 as a response to child-safety concerns and to comply with manufacturer guidance from the PMTA (Premarket Tobacco Application) process. Some newer batteries are starting to use 3-click variants or proprietary sequences, but the 5-click standard remains the most universal.
